LinkedIn lets you record audio clips to help others pronounce your name
You finally secure a video call with a potential client you have been chasing on LinkedIn for months. You put on your best shirt, set up the laptop, but the moment you open the meeting you suddenly realise that you don’t know how to pronounce their name…
If this has happened to you, worry no longer. The boffins at LinkedIn have developed an audio tool so users can record a 10-second clip of how their names sound. This clip is then displayed as a speaker icon on your LinkedIn profile. All page visitors have to do is click on the icon to hear how the name sounds, how clever is that?
The Wall Street Journal reports that LinkedIn product manager Joseph Akoni helped to develop the feature after experiencing the problem first-hand.
He said: “I’ve encountered this personally with my Nigerian middle name — there’s a 99% chance someone won’t pronounce it correctly on the first try.
Mr Akoni added that correct pronunciation not only makes a good first impression, but it can also help to create an inclusive workplace.
Is the LinkedIn audio function available to everyone?
The feature has been tested for quite a while, but LinkedIn announced at the start of July 2020 that it expected to roll out the audio option to all 690 million users by the end of the month.
Currently, the audio feature is only available in the LinkedIn iOS and Android apps, so check your profile on your phone or tablet. You also need to make sure that you are using the latest version of the app, which you can check by visiting your device’s app store.
The audio clips can be played back on both mobile and desktop computers.
How do I record my audio clip?
To add an audio clip to your LinkedIn account, visit your profile page on a mobile device. You should see a black box under your name which reads: “Let people know how to pronounce your name.”
Click on the link which says “Add name pronounciation” and you will be taken to a recording screen where you can record and save your audio clip.
Now, many of you will have spotted that 10 seconds is quite a generous amount of time. In fact, you would be surprised at how much you can squeeze into your audio clip. Expect people to record their name, along with their marketing slogan and contact details, just like a short radio advert.
